Er ist definiert als das Verhältnis einer Länge auf der Karte (Kartenstrecke) zu ihrer Entsprechung in der Natur (Naturstrecke).<br /> <br /> Die konkrete Darstellung in numerischer oder grafischer Form wird als Maßstabsangabe bezeichnet.
